3 members of 'robbery gang' arrested; SP says 'they robbed me too 2 days earlier'
“The same group robbed me two days ago. I came to see whether my phone had been recovered after hearing about the arrests, although it has not been found yet,” SP Shamima Yasmin says.
A female superintendent of police (SP) has claimed she fell victim to a mugging incident in the capital's Dhanmondi while returning home from a hospital on Saturday night (9 May).
"I was travelling by autorickshaw after receiving treatment at LabAid Hospital when a group of snatchers on a black motorcycle pulled away my bag," Police Staff College SP Shamima Yasmin told the media.
Meanwhile, Dhanmondi police yesterday (11 May) arrested three members of an alleged robbery gang during a raid.
After hearing about the arrests, the SP Shamima went to Dhanmondi Model Police Station, claiming that she had also become a victim of the same group just two days earlier near LabAid Hospital.
"The same group robbed me two days ago. I came to see whether my phone had been recovered after hearing about the arrests, although it has not been found yet," she said.
Speaking at a press conference, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna Division) Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (administration) Mir Asaduzzaman said the gang had five members and police launched an operation overnight to arrest them.
"When police confronted them near the Town Hall area at dawn, the gang members attacked officers, prompting police to fire four rounds. One snatcher was shot in the leg and three members of the gang were arrested. Drives are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects," he added.
The arrestees were identified as Palash and Sakib, two brothers from Gazipur, and their brother-in-law Biplob Hossain.
According to police, the gang was carrying out robberies on motorcycles in the Dhanmondi-27 area early yesterday when officers chased them. The suspects fled toward Mohammadpur and attacked police after reaching the Town Hall area.
During the raid, police recovered knives, machetes, a Chinese axe, a toy pistol and 10 stolen mobile phones from the suspects.
The "family-run" gang had been involved in snatching valuables from autorickshaw passengers and pedestrians across the capital under the cover of night.
