Police officer reprimanded following internal probe over bribery allegations
Hannan, in a phone conversation with the Daily Jugantor journalist Nesarul Haque Khokon, openly discussed transfer-related dealings and the use of subordinate officers for personal tasks
An Internal inquiry into bribery allegations against Barishal Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner and former Narsingdi Police superintendent (SP), Md Abdul Hannan, has ended with a formal reprimand, after a government probe found allegations of misconduct, abuse of power and damaging the police's reputation to be true.
The Home Ministry's Discipline-1 wing issued the order, signed by Senior Secretary Naimul Gani, stating that Hannan has been handed the punishment of "tiraskar" (reprimand).
According to the report of the recently formed departmental investigation committee, Hannan allegedly paid Tk50 lakh in bribes in 2023 to a man named Robiul Munshi in an attempt to secure a posting as Narsingdi SP. However, the political transition on 5 August 2024 meant the posting could not be implemented, the report said.
Later, after joining as Narsingdi SP on 9 November last year, Hannan and Detective Branch inspector SM Kamruzzaman, without permission, travelled to Dhaka and collected Tk5 lakh from Robiul Munshi's office in Manipuripara. A handwritten document was taken in their presence, acknowledging that the remaining Tk45 lakh would be returned.
The report further stated that Hannan, in a phone conversation with the Daily Jugantor journalist Nesarul Haque Khokon, openly discussed transfer-related dealings and the use of subordinate officers for personal tasks. Once the audio was published by the media, it "damaged the image of the police," the committee said.
After receiving a show-cause notice on the allegations, Hannan submitted a written response and requested a personal hearing. The hearing was held on 19 November, where statements, documents and investigation findings confirmed the charges.
The government subsequently imposed a formal reprimand based on the inquiry officer's findings and the hearing committee's decision, the order said.
