A Coordinator of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement of Rajshahi University, Nurul Islam Shahid, was attacked by miscreants in the city's Hatem Kha area at 11pm yesterday (22 January).

In protest, the university students organised a human chain at 1:30pm today demanding the arrest of the miscreants. Shahid is a student of the 2021-22 session of the Crop Science and Technology Department.

Mehedi Masud, OC of RMP's Boalia police station, said, "We have not received any complaint in this incident so far at the police station. I myself sent the police to investigate. He was discharged from the hospital after receiving primary treatment that night."

Rashed Rajon, who played a leading role in July uprising, said a few of the miscreants live in a rented house in the Hatem Kha area of the city.

Shahid was having dinner at his own house at 11pm yesterday. At that time, 20 to 25 miscreants suddenly entered the house and beat him up indiscriminately with iron rods, said Rashed. When Shahid introduced himself as the coordinator, he was beaten up further. Locals and elders came to rescue him and took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

He was discharged after receiving primary treatment at the emergency department of the medical college. Preparations are underway to file a case in this incident, added Rajon.

Mehedi Sajeeb, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Rajshahi University, said, "We are trying to find out why and for what reason the miscreants carried out the attack. We have organised a protest rally at Rajshahi University at 1:30pm today to protest the attack and demand the arrest of the miscreants."
