A least three people, including a woman, lost their lives in a head-on collision between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Kaliakair-Mawna regional road at Mediashulai in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district today (15 March).

The accident left two others injured. However, the identities of the deceased except one could not be known immediately, said police.

One of the deceased is Obaidul, the driver of the CNG-run auto-rickshaw, confirmed Officer-in-charge of Kaliakair Police Station Riad Mahmud.

OC Riad said among the deceased, two are men and one is a woman.

"The three deceased include the driver of the CNG-run auto-rickshaw and two passengers. However, the truck driver managed to flee. Police are working to find the identities of the deceased. A process is on to take legal steps in this regard," OC Riad said.

According to police and the locals, the CNG-run auto-rickshaw was coming to Kaliakair from Mawna Intersection in Gazipur's Sreepur in the morning, when it had a head-on collision with a brick-laden truck after reaching Mediashulai area on the Kaliakair-Mawna regional road around 9am.

The front of the CNG-run auto-rickshaw was seriously damaged in the accident, which killed the driver and two others on the spot and injured two more, police said quoting the locals.

The injured have been taken to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex, police added.
