Two passengers were killed and two others were critically injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a microbus in Anwara upazila of Chattogram this morning (31 May).

The auto-rickshaw was crushed in the impact, leading to the casualties, but the microbus managed to flee the scene despite damage to its body.

The accident occurred in the Jhiuri Mazar Gate area on the Anwara-Banshkhali PAB road at around 8:40am, said locals and police.

One of the deceased was identified as Md Yasin, 43, son of late Hafez Golam Shafi, while the identity of the other deceased could not be confirmed immediately.

The injured were identified as Alamgir, 28, and Brishna Dash, 29, both residents of Banshkhali upazila.

Anwara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Monir Hossain said, "Police rushed to the scene after receiving the information. The microbus fled towards Banshkhali after the accident, but its right-side mirror was found at the scene."

"Further investigation is underway," the OC said.

Quoting eyewitnesses, police said the auto-rickshaw was heading towards the city from Chambol in Banshkhali when it collided head-on with the microbus. The impact of the collision crushed the auto-rickshaw, killing two passengers on the spot.

Dr Mahatab Uddin Chowdhury of Anwara Upazila Health Complex said the injured were given initial treatment and were later referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) due to the severity of their injuries.

Authorities are working to identify the second deceased and trace the microbus.
