BGMEA urges factory closure tomorrow amid state mourning over Khaleda Zia’s death
BGMEA expressed full support for the government’s decision and requested the authorities concerned to declare a one-day general holiday on 31 December at all garment factories affiliated with the association.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has requested garment factory owners across the country to keep all factories closed tomorrow (31 December), expressing solidarity with the state mourning declared by the government following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
Khaleda Zia passed away at 6am today (30 December). Following her death, the government declared three days of state mourning along with a one-day general holiday.
In a press release, the BGMEA expressed full support for the government's decision and requested the authorities concerned to declare a one-day general holiday on 31 December at all garment factories affiliated with the association.
According to the government-announced programme, national mourning is being observed across the country over Khaleda Zia's death, and various government and private institutions have adopted mourning activities.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) Executive President Fazle Shamim Ehsan told The Business Standard that they expressed deep sorrow and grief over the death of Khaleda Zia.
He said all BKMEA member factories will remain closed on 31 December.
Fazle Shamim Ehsan noted that keeping factories closed during the government-declared general holiday is not mandatory. "However, out of respect for the government's decision, we have decided to keep our establishments closed," he added.
