BGB seizes contraband worth over BDT 174 crore in July operations

In July 2025, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) undertook extensive operations along the borders and within various parts of the country, resulting in the seizure of contraband goods valued at approximately BDT 174 crore 28 lakh 66 thousand.
The confiscated items included 9.267 kilograms of gold and 19.838 kilograms of silver. Additionally, the haul featured 15,041 sarees, 8,811 pieces of clothing such as shirts and blankets, 2,296 ready-made garments, and 2,941 meters of Thaan fabric. A significant quantity of 289,061 cosmetic items and over one million firecrackers were also seized. The operations recovered 3,921 cubic feet of wood, 3,345 kilograms of tea leaves, 68,129 kilograms of betel nuts, 16,134 kilograms of fertiliser, 10,875 kilograms of coal, and 40,373 kilograms of threads and nets. Electronics confiscated included 343 mobile phones, 468 batteries, and 7,861 displays, along with 46,644 eyeglasses.
The seizures extended to various agricultural products such as fruits, edible oils, cumin seeds, shrimp fry, coffee, chocolates, and livestock, including 943 cattle and buffaloes. Vehicles involved in smuggling operations encompassed trucks, pickups, private cars, boats, CNG-run vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles. Weapons recovered comprised pistols, revolvers, submachine guns (SMGs), rifles, hand grenades, magazines, bullets, gunpowder, and other firearms.
A large quantity of narcotics and intoxicants was also confiscated. These included 989,583 yaba tablets, 816 grams of crystal meth (ice), 3.45 kilograms of heroin, 140 grams of cocaine, and 10,687 bottles of phensedyl. Thousands of bottles of local and foreign liquors, cannabis, bidi, cigarettes, tobacco leaves, various tablets, injections, and other medicines were also seized.
During the operations, 213 smugglers and 204 Bangladeshi citizens, along with nine Indian nationals, were arrested for drug trafficking and illegal border crossing, with legal action promptly initiated. Furthermore, 540 Myanmar nationals attempting illegal entry were repatriated.
