The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar has been officially renamed to the National Special Economic Zone.

The industrial city, country's largest economic zone, located over approximately 33,000 acres of land in the Sitakunda, Mirsharai, and Sonagazi upazilas of Chattogram and Feni, is being developed under a master plan of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza).

On 5 August, following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina, Beza proposed the name change.

On 6 November, the chief advisor's office sent a letter to Beza's executive chairman, instructing to rename Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar as the National Special Economic Zone and to update the names of all associated projects, roads, reservoirs, and other facilities accordingly

Ashik Chowdhury, executive chairman of Beza, explained the rationale behind the decision, saying, "As you know, similar name changes have been made across all government agencies. We have submitted the new name, and it has now been officially changed.

"Other name changes have been based on districts or locations. We chose the name National Special Economic Zone because of its importance as a priority area. Since the zone covers three districts, it was not feasible to name it after each one."

According to Beza sources, this industrial city is being developed as Bangladesh's first planned industrial city, and it is set to be one of the largest in Southeast Asia. Once fully operational, the zone is expected to provide employment for approximately 1.5 million people.
