Arson attack damages ex-MP Anisul Islam's home in Chattogram
The incident took place around midnight at Jatiya Party leader and former lawmaker Anisul Islam Mahmud's ancestral home in Sadek Nagar village in Hathazari upazila
Unidentified miscreants set fire to the village home of former minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram late Friday night (19 December), damaging parts of the house and burning a car.
The incident took place around midnight at his ancestral home in Sadek Nagar village under Gumanmardan union.
Local residents said a group arrived suddenly, vandalised the property and set it on fire before fleeing the scene. Neighbours rushed to the spot and tried to douse the flames.
The Hathazari Fire Service and Civil Defence unit later arrived and brought the fire under control. By then, the car had been completely burnt, and two rooms of the two-storey house were damaged.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle) Kazi Md Tariq Aziz said he visited the site after receiving the report.
"We are investigating to identify those responsible for the arson," he said.
Police said the motive behind the attack is being investigated. No arrests have been made so far.
Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud is a senior leader of a faction of the Jatiya Party and a former minister for environment, forest and water resources. He previously represented the Chattogram-5 (Hathazari) constituency in parliament.
