Rana claimed the damage amounted to at least Tk10 lakh.
The house of a Jubo Dal leader in Bagerhat was set on fire in the early hours of today (16 February) at Mandra village in Bishnupur Union under the sadar upazila.
Confirming the matter, Bagerhat Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Masum Khan said, "There had been a longstanding dispute over local dominance, and the victim suspects rivals were behind the attack."
"The house and kitchen have been reduced to ashes. Police are investigating and details will be known after the probe," the OC added.
Speaking to The Business Standard, the affected leader, Md Alimuzzaman Rana, a candidate for the post of general secretary of Bishnupur Union Jubo Dal, said, "A group of miscreants entered his home at night and set fire to the wooden and tin-shed structure while his family members were asleep."
"After dinner we went to bed. In the darkness, miscreants set fire around the house. Smoke woke us up and we rushed outside to save our lives. Within moments the entire house caught fire," he added.
Rana further said, "Later, local villagers and a unit of the fire service managed to extinguish the flames. By that time, my residence and kitchen had completely burnt down. The fire destroyed the TV, fridge, furniture, and various other household items."
Rana claimed the damage amounted to at least Tk10 lakh.
