The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested another alleged shooter in connection with the killing of former Swechchhasebak Dal leader Md Azizur Rahman Musabbir in the capital's Tejgaon Industrial Area.
Detectives arrested Rahim today (23 January) in Narsingdi, according to police.
DB Additional Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam told The Business Standard that Rahim is one of the two shooters involved in Musabbir's murder.
Operations are still underway to recover the two firearms used in the killing, he said, adding that the media will be briefed soon with further details.
Earlier, the DB arrested four people, including one alleged shooter, in connection with the murder: Jinnat, 24, one of the two alleged shooters; Md Billal, the alleged main coordinator; Abdul Qadir, 28, who allegedly helped the accused go into hiding; and Md Riaz, 31, who reportedly conducted reconnaissance at the crime scene a day before the killing.
These arrests were made on 10 January during a series of raids conducted in Dhaka, Gazipur, Manikganj, Bhairab, Kishoreganj, Mymensingh and Netrokona districts.
Police also recovered an unregistered motorcycle used in the crime and Tk6,000 in cash at the time.
At the time, Additional Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said police initially suspected the murder stemmed from a business dispute, but were also investigating possible political and other motives.
Musabbir was shot dead at around 8:20pm on 7 January in front of the Ahsanullah Institute of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (AITVET) centre in Tejgaon.
During the attack, Sufian Bepari, also known as Masud, general secretary of the Karwan Bazar Van Owners' Association, was injured by gunfire. A murder case filed by Musabbir's wife, Suraiya Begum, is currently being investigated by the DB.
