7 held during raid at ex-education minister Nowfel's Ctg house
Md Solaiman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Panchlaish Police Station, told The Business Standard, “We thoroughly searched the entire house but found no evidence of any such meeting.”
Police have detained seven people after conducting a raid at the residence of former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel in Chashma Hill, located in the 2 No Gate area under Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram.
According to police, the operation was carried out following a Facebook post that claimed an Awami League meeting was taking place at the house ahead of the party-declared 'Dhaka lockdown' programme. Acting on the information, police immediately conducted the raid.
Md Solaiman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Panchlaish Police Station, told The Business Standard, "We thoroughly searched the entire house but found no evidence of any such meeting."
He said the seven detainees are not family members of Nowfel but identified themselves as employees of his younger brother's restaurant.
"Investigation revealed that after Nowfel left the country on 5 August, his younger brother Borhan and BNP leader Niaz jointly operated a restaurant named 'Milano' at Yakub Centre. The detained individuals work as delivery staff for the restaurant. We have also found some evidence supporting this," he added.
Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, son of former Chattogram City Corporation mayor late ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, served as deputy minister for education and later as education minister following the 2024 national election.
He reportedly left the country after the fall of the Awami League government.
