At least 50 shops were gutted when vandals set fire to Larma Square market in Khagrachhari's Dighinala yesterday (19 September) during a clash that left five injured.

Nurul Haque, officer-in-charge of the Dighinala police station, told The Business Standard that miscreants have set fire to the market. Efforts to extinguish the fire are currently underway, he said in the evening.

Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Md Shahiduzzaman said the army and Border Guard Bangladesh have been deployed in Dighinala and Khagrachhari Sadar and coordinated patrols have been intensified to maintain stability in the areas.

According to local sources, in protest against the lynching of a youth named Md Mamun, 30, in the district at Wednesday dawn, some students brought out a protest march from the Dighinala College area around 3:30pm yesterday.

As the procession passed through Larma Square, a clash began with a rival group of students.

A chase and counter-chase took place while sounds of several rounds of gunfire were also heard. At least five people from both sides were injured in the clash. They were admitted to Dighinala Health Complex for treatment.
