A Dhaka court has sent four individuals, including former Students Against Discrimination (SAD) leader Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman Riyad, to jail in connection with an attempted murder case involving a student of Presidency University.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi issued the order today (27 February) after Gulshan Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Arman Ali produced the suspects in court.
Riyad, also a student of the university, was earlier arrested in connection with a case of attempted extortion of Tk50 lakh from the residence of Awami League (now-banned) leader and former MP Shammi Ahmed in the capital's Gulshan area in July last year.
Later, he secured bail.
The other three accused are Riadul Hawlader, Alif Ahmed Ashik and Sayem Shikdaer.
The suspects were arrested around 8:30pm yesterday.
Confirming the matter, Prosecution Division SI Moktar Hossain said the court has scheduled a bail hearing for 1 March.
According to the case statement, on 3:30pm yesterday (26 February), Riadul and Sayem struck victim Nirjan Sardar Badhon with chairs in a classroom on the university's third floor, causing injuries to his chest and back.
Riyad attacked him with a switchblade with intent to kill, striking his face.
University teachers and students intervened before Gulshan Police arrived at the scene and detained the suspects.
The case also alleged that the accused held a prior grudge against Nirjan.
Later, the victim filed an attempted to murder case naming 11 people.
