Ex-DGFI officials Mamun, Naser placed on fresh remand in BNP activist killing case

A Dhaka court today (12 April) placed former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence chief Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled and dismissed DGFI official Md Afzal Naser on fresh remand in a case filed over the killing of a BNP activist in the capital's Paltan area.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order following separate petitions filed by the police.
The court granted one day of remand for Mamun and two days for Naser.
Earlier, police produced the two accused in court and sought remand for further interrogation.
The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md Tofazzal Hossain of the special operations team under the DB Motijheel Division, applied for one day of remand for Khaled and five days for Naser.
Defence counsel Morshed Hossain Shahin pleaded for cancellation of the remand plea and sought bail, while state prosecutor Omar Faruq opposed the bail plea.
After hearing both sides, the court approved one day of remand for Mamun and two days for Naser.
Mamun was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) from his residence in Mirpur DOHS on the night of 25 March.
He was subsequently placed on a total of 16 days' remand in four phases.
Naser was arrested on 30 March at a house on Road 12 in Mirpur DOHS.
He was then remanded for 13 days in three phases.
According to the case statement, on 10 December 2022, the BNP announced a one-point movement demanding the fall of the then government.
During the programme, attacks and vandalism were carried out at the party's Naya Paltan office, and thousands of party leaders and activists gathered nearby also came under attack.
A BNP activist, Makbul Hossain, was shot and killed during the incident.
In connection with the incident, a case was filed on 30 September by Mahfuzur Rahman against 256 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
