Ex-DGFI director Afzal Naser remanded again in July Uprising killing case
The court granted a three-day remand
A Dhaka court has placed former dismissed DGFI director Md Afzal Naser on a fresh three-day remand in connection with a murder case over the killing of Mahmudul Hasan during the July Uprising in the capital's Uttara East area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order today (2 May) following his previous three-day remand, according to court sources.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Ashraful Alam of Uttara East Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
Upon consideration of the plea, the court granted a three-day remand.
In the remand plea, the investigation officer said preliminary findings indicate the accused's involvement in the incident.
The investigation also suggests that, under his direction, violent operations were carried out to suppress students during the July Uprising. Police said sufficient evidence has been found in this regard.
The plea further stated that additional interrogation is necessary to uncover the full circumstances of the incident and to ensure a proper investigation.
Earlier, on 30 March, members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Afzal Naser from a house on Road 12 in Mirpur DOHS in the early hours. He has since been taken on remand in multiple cases.
According to the case statement, on 5 August 2024, victim Mahmudul Hasan joined a procession of the July anti-discrimination student movement.
Around 4pm, when protesters reached the east side of the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway near the Azampur foot overbridge under Uttara East Police Station, the accused and several unidentified individuals opened fire while armed illegally, where Mahmudul sustained bullet injuries and collapsed on the spot.
Following the incident, the victim's family filed a murder case with Uttara East Police Station.
