A Dhaka court today (13 July) fixed 15 July for the hearing on a petition seeking to show former ICT Division senior secretary NM Ziaul Alam, arrested in a case filed over the murder of Mahbub Hassan Mamun during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman passed the order as the main case documents were not present during the scheduled hearing.
However, the court had previously fixed today for the hearing in the presence of the accused, who was produced before the court from jail today and subsequently sent back.
Earlier on 9 July, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Md Abdul Alim of Kafrul Police Station, submitted the application to show Ziaul arrested.
According to the plea, preliminary investigation has revealed widespread evidence of Ziaul's involvement in the murder case.
The police noted that a remand application may be submitted in the future if interrogation is required, adding that formally showing him arrested is essential for a fair investigation and justice. Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the court proceedings to The Business Standard.
According to the case statement, Mahbub Hassan Mamun, 34, participated in the July Uprising in front of the BRTA office under Mirpur Police Station's jurisdictional area on 19 July 2024.
He sustained fatal gunshot wounds at around 4:30pm and was later declared dead at a hospital. Following the incident, the victim's wife filed a murder case with Kafrul Police Station naming 161 individuals, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, as accused.
Ziaul Alam, who was arrested by police from the Panchlaish area of Chattogram on 5 March last year, remains behind bars.
He was previously placed on a two-day remand on 6 March 2025, under the Cyber Security Act in connection with a case filed by one Shamimur Rahman with Kafrul Police Station on 8 October 2024.
In that case, he is accused of giving unauthorised permission to Digicon Global Services Limited to use citizens' national ID (NID) information for commercial purposes, which was subsequently sold to 183 domestic and foreign companies without safety compliance, embezzling around Tk20,000 crore.
Additionally, on 1 September last year, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Israt Jenifar Jerin ordered him to be shown arrested in connection with the murder of a teenager named Md Rustom, who was shot dead near Shah Ali Plaza in the Mirpur-10 area also under the Kafrul Police Station on 19 July 2024.
Prior to that, Ziaul was also shown arrested in another case filed with the same police station on 2 July regarding the death of Md Atikul Islam, who was fatally shot during a demonstration during the July Uprising.
