The historic Gibraltar border ends as Spain opens free travel under the new Brexit agreement
Gibraltar and Spain are entering a historic new era as border controls and the physical fence separating the two territories are set to be removed from July 15, 2026. The post-Brexit agreement will align Gibraltar with the European customs union and the Schengen free travel zone, transforming travel, trade, and daily life for thousands of cross-border commuters. The deal also introduces new tax rules, EU standards for goods, and fresh opportunities and challenges for businesses on both sides of the border.
