A Dhaka court has allowed police to show controversial "casino kingpin" Selim Prodhan arrested in an attempted murder and Explosives Act case filed over the shooting of a protester during the 2024 July Uprising in the capital's Gulshan.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order today (13 July) after Gulshan Police sought permission to show him arrested in the case.
State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the development.
Police produced Selim Prodhan before the court, saying his arrest in the case was necessary for a proper investigation.
According to the police application, Selim Prodhan was an active leader and a major financier of the previous Awami League government.
Investigators said they had found information indicating that he directly incited attacks on students in the Gulshan and Vatara areas during the student movement and provided financial support for those attacks, including the planned shooting of the complainant.
Defence lawyers opposed the application, while the prosecution argued in support of it. After hearing both sides, the court granted the police request.
According to the case statement, protesters taking part in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement came under indiscriminate gunfire near Banshtala in Notun Bazar under Gulshan Police Station on 5 August 2024.
The complainant, Md Touhid Mia, sustained serious gunshot injuries in the incident.
He later filed a complaint case before the court, naming 88 people as accused and another 100 to 200 unidentified individuals in connection with the attack.
