AC blast at Biam Foundation office kills one, injures another

A man was killed and another injured in the early hours of today (28 February) after an air-conditioner exploded in a room of the Bangladesh Institute of Administration and Management (Biam) Foundation office in the capital's New Eskaton area.
The deceased was Abdul Malek Khan, 40, of Patuakhali's Bauphal upazila, who worked at the foundation as an office assistant, said Hatirjheel Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Moniruzzaman.
Another person, driver Md Faruk, 30, also sustained burn injuries in the incident and admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS).
Media reports, citing Hatirjheel police, said that the explosion and subsequent fire occurred in the room on the fourth floor of the BIAM Foundation at about 3:30am. Later, two firefighting units arrived at the scene and doused the flames. Malek was found on the building's cornice.
Malek was rescued in a critical condition and rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at about 6:45am, where on-duty doctors declared him dead, officials said.
Sohel Khan, brother of Malek, said, "At night, his brother and driver Faruk used to sleep in the office. At some point Thursday night, the AC exploded, leaving them severely injured. Upon receiving the news, he was rushed him to the hospital, but the doctors informed us that he had already died."
According to Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at NIBPS, Faruk suffered 48% burns on his body.
Malek's body was kept at the morgue of DMCH for a post-mortem report, SI Moniruzzaman said.
