US to close five embassies and consulates as Trump reshapes the State Department
The US State Department has notified Congress of plans to close five foreign diplomatic missions as part of the Trump administration's America First agenda. The proposed closures affect posts in Grenada, Japan, Indonesia, Canada, and Cameroon, while more than 1,350 State Department employees are also being dismissed.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the changes are aimed at making the department more efficient. However, critics argue the move could weaken America's global diplomatic presence and create opportunities for China and Russia, noting that China already has missions in several of the affected locations.
