National polls: EC withholds results of 3 constituencies over pending cases
According to the EC, results for Sherpur-2, Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 will remain suspended due to ongoing cases in the Appellate Division. The outcomes will be announced only after final disposal of the cases.
The Election Commission has decided not to declare the results of three constituencies in the 13th National Parliamentary Election until the disposal of related cases pending before the Appellate Division.
The decision was disclosed in three separate letters issued yesterday (12 February).
According to the EC, results for Sherpur-2, Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 will remain suspended due to ongoing cases in the Appellate Division. The outcomes will be announced only after final disposal of the cases.
In a letter regarding Chattogram-4, the commission said following the Appellate Division's 3 February order, BNP candidate Mohammad Aslam Chowdhury is permitted to contest the election. However, the commission is legally bound to withhold publication of his result until final disposal of the appeal. As such, the EC has decided to keep the result suspended.
Similarly, in Chattogram-2, the EC said BNP candidate Sarwar Alamgir has been allowed to contest, but the publication of his result will remain suspended until final resolution of another case.
For Sherpur-2, the commission stated that BNP candidate Mohammad Fahim Chowdhury is also allowed to participate in the election. However, the commission said the final result will be subject to the final order of the Appellate Division.
The EC has instructed the respective returning officers to take necessary steps in line with the decisions.
