Nail-biting battles in more than 50 seats
The election, the first since the August 2024 uprising, saw intense competition between major parties, particularly the BNP and Jamaat-backed candidates, in more than four dozen seats.
More than 50 parliamentary aspirants narrowly missed victory in the recently concluded 13th parliamentary election, losing by margins of fewer than 5,000 votes in closely fought contests across the country.
The election, the first since the August 2024 uprising, saw intense competition between major parties, particularly the BNP and Jamaat-backed candidates, in more than four dozen seats.
In Sirajganj-4, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Rafiqul Islam Khan secured victory with 1,61,872 votes, defeating BNP's M Akbar Ali by just 594 votes.
Another tight race unfolded in Khulna-5, where Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar polled 1,46,246 votes but lost by roughly 2,500 votes to BNP's Mohammad Ali Asghar Lobby.
Some of the constituencies in Dhaka witnessed some of the closest races.
In Dhaka-13, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque lost to BNP-nominated candidate Bobby Hajjaj by 2,320 votes.
In Dhaka-17, Jamaat candidate SM Khaliduzzaman lost to Tarique Rahman by 4,399 votes, while in Dhaka-11, NCP's Nahid Islam triumphed over BNP's MA Quayum by 2,039 votes. In Dhaka-8, Nasiruddin Patwary lost to BNP heavyweight Mirza Abbas by 5,239 votes.
Again, in Dhaka-4, BNP's Tanveer Ahmed Robin lost to Jamaat's Syed Zainul Abedin by 2,920 votes. In Dhaka-10, Jamaat candidate Md Jashim Uddin Sarker lost to BNP's Sheikh Rabiul Alam by 3,300 votes, while in Dhaka-16, Jamaat's Abdul Baten won against BNP's Md Aminul Haque by 3,361 votes.
Outside Dhaka, in Khulna-2, BNP candidate Nazrul Islam Monju lost to Jamaat's Zahangir Hossain Helal by 5,592 votes. In Gaibandha-4 (Gobindaganj), Jamaat candidate Abdur Rahim Sarker was defeated by BNP's Mohammad Shamim Kaiser Linkon by 2,112 votes.
In Panchagarh-1, NCP Chief Organiser (northern region) Sarjis Alam lost to BNP's Barrister Mohammad Nawshad Zamir by 8,120 votes. In Dinajpur-3, Jamaat's Md Mynul Alam was defeated by BNP's Syed Jahangir Alam by around 4,000 votes and in Dinajpur-5, NCP candidate Md Abdul Ahad lost the vote by a similar margin.
