In a historic breakthrough in the 13th national election, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has secured its first-ever seats in the capital, winning four constituencies – Dhaka-4, Dhaka-5, Dhaka-15 and Dhaka-16 – by notable margins.
In Dhaka-4, Syed Zainul Abedin was elected with 77,367 votes, narrowly defeating BNP candidate Tanvir Ahmed, who secured 74,447 votes.
Mohammad Kamal Hossain won Dhaka-5 with 95,713 votes, defeating BNP's Md Nabi Ullah, who secured 86,978 votes.
In Dhaka-15, Jamaat chief Shafiqul Rahman clinched a decisive victory with 82,645 votes against BNP candidate Md Safiqul Islam Khan's 61,920 votes.
Jamaat's Abdul Baten captured Dhaka-16 with 88,828 votes, defeating BNP's Md Aminul Haque, who bagged 85,467 votes.
Since Bangladesh's independence in 1971, Jamaat had never won a parliamentary seat in Dhaka.
Although the party contested multiple elections, including those in 1979, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2008, its previous victories were all outside the capital.
The party did not take part in the national elections held between 2014 and 2024.
