Jamaat ameer announces plan to make Faridpur division
He also highlighted plans for economic revitalisation of the region, particularly through the jute sector.
Faridpur would be upgraded to a separate division if Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami comes to power, said the party's ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Friday (6 February).
"I have said this before, Faridpur will be made a division, and it will not be under any other name. It will be Faridpur Division," he said while addressing an election rally at the Government Rajendra College ground in Faridpur town.
Shafiqur also highlighted plans for economic revitalisation of the region, particularly through the jute sector.
He said the closed jute mills in Faridpur would be reopened and new mills would be established to revive the industry's past glory. He further pledged effective measures to prevent river erosion in vulnerable areas.
Criticising political repression, the Jamaat ameer said the country must move away from a culture of violence and persecution of political opponents.
"We do not want a Bangladesh where people are killed, forcibly disappeared, sent to Aynaghor, or harassed with false cases simply for being political opponents," he said.
"I do not want a party-based government, a family-based government, or a group-based government. I want a government of the people," the Jamaat chief added.
During the rallies, Shafiqur Rahman also introduced Jamaat-e-Islami candidates for Faridpur and Rajbari constituencies and sought votes on their behalf ahead of the upcoming national election.
