Man accused of killing grandmother, aunt and neighbour arrested in Faridpur
They arrested Akash Molla, 28, early today (28 April) at a banana grove near his house in Gadadhar Dangi village under Aliabad union, within 12 hours of the incident.
A man accused in a case over the murder of his grandmother, aunt and a neighbour in Faridpur Sadar upazila has been arrested by a joint team of RAB and police.
They arrested Akash Molla, 28, early today (28 April) at a banana grove near his house in Gadadhar Dangi village under Aliabad union, within 12 hours of the incident.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shahidul Islam said the accused will be produced in court after initial interrogation, and further steps in the case will be determined based on the progress of the investigation.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Md Shamsul Azam said the joint team conducted the drive based on a tip-off, arrested him at dawn and took him into custody.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Gazi Md Lutfar Rahman of RAB-10 said, "After confirming the accused's location, a swift operation was carried out… During arrest, his speech was incoherent, raising the need to further examine his mental condition."
The murders took place at around 10pm yesterday in the courtyard of Azgar Molla's house in the same village.
According to locals, Akash suddenly appeared with a spade and launched an attack.
The victims killed in the attack were his grandmother Amena Begum, 75, his aunt Saleha Begum, 55, and a neighbour Kabul Chowdhury, 49.
Riaz Molla, 45, was seriously injured and taken to a hospital.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police Md Nazrul Islam said police recovered the bodies shortly after the incident, prepared inquest reports and initiated legal proceedings.
Preliminary information suggests the accused may be mentally unstable, though authorities are also investigating whether there were other motives or plans behind the attack.
Police sources said the accused will be interrogated and arrangements are being made for a mental health examination.
Law enforcement is also working to recover the spade used in the killings and determine the motive.
The incident has created panic in the area, with locals expressing concern over security. Additional police have been deployed to maintain law and order.
