Intense heatwave sizzles Delhi and North India
In Delhi, temperatures hovered between 44 and 45 degrees Celsius, with isolated pockets expected to witness severe heatwave-like conditions during the day.
As Delhi and large parts of north India continue to sizzle under intense heatwaves, a state-run hospital in the Indian capital has recorded its first heatstroke case of the season, involving a 24-year-old student from West Bengal who remains in critical condition after being brought unconscious to the facility this morning.
The patient was admitted around 1:45am with symptoms including vomiting, loose motions, altered sensorium, faecal incontinence and extremely high body temperature, said Dr Ajay Chauhan, Director Professor of Medicine at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
"He was travelling in a train and was suffering from vomiting, tiredness and loose motions. He was brought to the hospital in a state of unconsciousness. We immediately put him in ice water and tried to cool him down," Chauhan said.
The weather department issued orange alerts for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, warning of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions, while red alerts were issued for warm night conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha.

An orange alert has been issued for Delhi and surrounding regions as temperatures are likely to remain above 45 degrees Celsius over the next seven days, said India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist Naresh Kumar.
The IMD said the national capital could see temperatures touching around 46 degrees Celsius.
