Hotel fire in India's West Bengal kills at least 7, several injured
Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bundesh told reporters that Tarapith police station received information at around 5am that a fire had broken out at a lodge.
A hotel fire in West Bengal's Birbhum district killed at least seven people and left several others critically injured today (17 August), police said.
The fire broke out at around 5am on the ground floor of the four-storey hotel in the temple town of Tarapith when most of the guests were asleep, they said.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control.
Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bundesh told reporters that Tarapith police station received information at around 5am that a fire had broken out at a lodge.
"The building was enclosed with glass panes and doors, so smoke and flames were not visible from outside. Seven people died in the incident." he said.
He added 22 people were rescued alive, while 11 were sent to hospital and two are currently undergoing treatment.
