'Let's not blow it': Trump criticises Israeli strike on Beirut, urges de-escalation amid Iran talks
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump says the attack took place on what he described as a “special day”.
US President Donald Trump today (14 June) has expressed concern over Israel's recent airstrike on Beirut, saying the operation "should not have happened," particularly at a time when diplomatic progress with Iran is reportedly close.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the attack took place on what he described as a "special day," adding that the United States and Iran were nearing a potential agreement that could help reduce tensions across the region, including Lebanon.
While acknowledging Israel's right to self-defence, Trump described the strike it was responding to as "very small and meaningless," suggesting the escalation was disproportionate.
He further claimed that negotiations between Washington and Tehran were approaching a breakthrough that could contribute to broader regional peace, and called on all sides to avoid further military action.
"There should be no more attacks by Israel or any other party," he wrote, warning that continued violence could jeopardise what he described as a rare opportunity for lasting peace. "Let's not blow it," he added, referring to the fragile diplomatic progress.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where international actors have been pushing for restraint alongside ongoing efforts to revive negotiations involving Iran.
