Makhana maintains momentum in domestic market despite price hike
Despite a 40% drop in exports due to U.S. tariffs, Indian makhana still has a strong presence in domestic and international markets. In 2024-25, India exported around 800 metric tons of makhana. Rising domestic demand and interest from new entrepreneurs are boosting the sector. The Indian government has set up a "Makhana Board" with a budget of 1 billion rupees to provide farmer training, technology support, and export facilitation. High profits are encouraging farmers to switch from other crops to makhana cultivation. With growing global demand, the long-term prospects for Indian makhana remain bright despite short-term tariff pressures.
