BNP leaders pay tribute at National Martyrs' Memorial on behalf of Tarique as sunset deadline missed
According to the BNP Media Cell, the party delegation reached the memorial and formally placed wreaths at 5:06pm in line with established rules and protocol
Senior leaders of the BNP today (26 December) paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar on behalf of the party's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, as it was not possible for him to reach the memorial before sunset.
According to the BNP Media Cell, the party delegation reached the memorial and formally placed wreaths at 5:06pm in line with established rules and protocol.
BNP Standing Committee members Gayeshwar Roy and Abdul Moyeen Khan were present at the ceremony, along with members of the BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council Amanullah Aman and Lutfozzaman Babar.
Dhaka District BNP President Khandaker Abu Ashfaq and General Secretary Advocate Nipon Roy Chowdhury were also among those in attendance.
Other leaders present included Dewana Mohammad Salahuddin, Tamiz Uddin, Yasin Ferdous Murad, Ayub Khan, Maj Gen (retd) Fazle Elahi Akbar, and BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan, among others.
Earlier in the day, a day after returning home following more than 17 years in exile, Tarique Rahman visited the grave of his father, late president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar to pay his respects.
Tarique Rahman placed a wreath at the grave along with senior party leaders, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and members of the party's Standing Committee.
He left his Gulshan Avenue residence around 2:54pm in a bus decorated in red and green under tight security and reached Ziaur Rahman's grave at around 4:45pm. It took him one hour and 51 minutes to reach the site due to the massive presence of party leaders and activists lining both sides of the road, which narrowed the route for his motorcade.
After paying homage at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Tarique Rahman was expected to proceed to the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar to honour the heroes of the Liberation War.
