Tarique's return should be seen in election context: India
'India supports free, fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh and this development should be seen in that context', says Jaiswal
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman's return to Bangladesh after more than 17 years of exile in London should be viewed in the context of the country's free, fair and inclusive elections, according to Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
"India supports free, fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh and this development should be seen in that context," the spokesperson said regarding the return of Tarique Rahman.
Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks while addressing a weekly press briefing today (26 December).
Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on 25 December from London after more than 17 years in exile, drawing massive crowds of supporters and wide coverage from leading international media outlets.
Hundreds of thousands of BNP supporters lined the route from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to the reception venue in Dhaka's 300 feet area, waving party flags and chanting slogans as they welcomed their leader home.
Global media organisations including the BBC, Reuters, Al Jazeera and The Telegraph prominently covered his homecoming, describing him as a leading contender to become Bangladesh's next prime minister ahead of the upcoming general election.
