Veteran off-spinner for the Bangladesh national team, Abdur Razzaq has been approached by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to become a national team selector.

With a place being vacant in the three-man selection panel for the national team, the BCB have stepped up their search to fill up the vacancy and believes Razzaq would be the ideal candidate.

But the 37-year-old is yet to accept the offer as he still believes he has more to offer in the field and wants to continue his playing career, Razzaq has revealed to The Business Standard.

As a result, Razzaq has not yet accepted former national team captain and current selector, Habibul Bashar's offer.

The left-arm off-spinner, who is the third-highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in one-day international (ODI) cricket, has expressed he wants to take time to come to a decision but would discuss about this matter in the future.

"I spoke to Sumon Bhai (Habibul Bashar) about whether I'd be interested in becoming a selector. He asked me about what my future plans were," Razzaq said.

Razzaq is currently playing for Mohammedan Sporting Club in the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (BDPL) which has come to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The man who has represented Bangladesh in 13 Tests, 153 ODIs and 34 twenty20 internationals (T20Is) said, "I am still playing and as a result, I haven't given the board a decision on the matter. I have said I'd let them know my decision soon."

Although Bashar spoke about the matter of being a selector to Razzaq an official proposal was not presented according to BCB cricket operations committee chairman Akram Khan: "We have not tabled an official proposal to Razzaq. Maybe Sumon (Habibul Bashar) spoke about the matter of becoming a selector with Razzaq both it was nothing official."

Apart from Razzaq, two other names are on BCB's radar to fill the third selector's spot - former left-arm pacer Manjarul Islam and left-handed top-order batsman Shahriar Nafees.

Currently, there are two selectors for the national team - former national team cricketer Minhajul Abedin who has been the chief selector since 2016, and Habibul Bashar.

Despite being away from the national team since 2018 in Test and 2014 in ODIs and T20Is, Razzaq has continued his cricketing career with good success in the domestic circuit.
