Injured fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has been named in Bangladesh's squad for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.

Pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib has been called up in spite of his below-par outings against Zimbabwe recently. Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam is set to be part of an ICC tournament squad for the first time.

A notable omission was Mohammad Saifuddin, who failed with the ball in his last two opportunities against Zimbabwe.

Taskin, who has been nursing a side strain, is expected to be fit at some point of the tournament which makes him an interesting choice for the role of the vice-captain.

Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud has been named in the squad as a travelling reserve and he is likely to take Taskin's spot in the upcoming T20I series against the USA. Middle-order batter Afif Hossain will also travel with the team.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, now the team's skipper across formats, is set to lead Bangladesh in an ICC event as a full-time captain. He previously led Bangladesh in a couple of matches in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Under-19 World Cup winners Tanzid Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Shoriful Islam are also part of the squad.

Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain and wicketkeeper-batter Jaker Ali are going to play a global cricket event for the first time.

Former captain Shakib Al Hasan is going to be one of only two cricketers to be part of every edition of the T20 World Cup. The other player is the India captain Rohit Sharma.

Mahmudullah, who was not part of the 2022 event in Australia, is back for his eighth T20 World Cup.

SQUAD: Najmul Hossain Shanto (captain), Taskin Ahmed (vice-captain), Litton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Jaker Ali, Tanvir Islam, Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

Travelling reserves: Hasan Mahmud, Afif Hossain.
