Students demand resignation of top Competition Commission officials for ‘failing to control syndicates’
This afternoon (15 October), around 40 students were seen gathered outside the office of the commission's acting chairperson, Salma Akhtar Jahan

A group of students has staged a demonstration at the office of the Bangladesh Competition Commission in Dhaka's Eskaton, demanding the resignation of top officials for their failure to control the influence of syndicates responsible for hiking commodity prices.
The Bangladesh Competition Commission was established in 2016 under the Competition Act 2012 with the authority to break monopolies, oligopolies, and syndicates. They are empowered to impose exemplary fines on offenders.
This afternoon (15 October), around 40 students were seen gathered outside the office of the commission's acting chairperson, Salma Akhtar Jahan.
The protestors demanded the resignation of the acting chairperson and two other members of the commission for their failure to control market syndicates.
They were seen holding various banners, including some reading "Bangladesh Competition Commission turned into a failed institution", "Complete failure in controlling market syndicates" and "Immediate removal of three corrupt members of former commerce Minister Tipu Munshi".
Khaled Saifullah, a student from Dhaka University, told The Business Standard, they had also informed the Ministry of Commerce about their demands.
"We had learned that the three officials will resign, but we had not received any written order yet. If the officials do not resign by tomorrow, we will continue our protest."
Tamim Hossain, a student from Government Bangla College, said, "If they were involved in any market manipulation, they should be tried. We had been protesting from morning till 8pm the previous day."
