Beijing firmly opposes US tariff hikes on Chinese imports, China's commerce ministry said in a statement on Saturday, urging the US to immediately correct its "wrongdoings" and lift all tariffs imposed on Chinese goods.

"China will take necessary measures to resolutely defend the interests of Chinese companies," the statement said.

This statement came a day after the US confirmed significant tariff hikes, including a 100% duty on electric vehicles to protect its strategic industries in response to China's state-driven industrial policies.

The US Trade Representative's office said many of the tariffs, including a 100% duty on Chinese EVs, 50% on solar cells and 25% on steel, aluminum, EV batteries and key minerals, would take effect on 27 September.
