Two brothers were killed as a clash broke out between locals and three brothers during a family dispute in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram yesterday evening (3 September) following, according to the police.

The incident occurred around 7pm at Samad Bari in Ward no 5 of Jafatnagar Union.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Alamgir and Mohammad Jahangir, both expatriates.

Confirming the incident, Fatikchhari police station Inspector (Investigation) Abu Zafar told The Business Standard, "Preliminary reports suggest one of the brothers decided to divorce his wife. Family members and some neighbors opposed this decision. As a continuation of this tension, two brothers were hacked to death during a clash in the evening."

Zia Uddin, chairman of Jafatnagar Union, said the incident was sparked by Karim (brother of the deceased), a resident of Samad Bari who recently returned from Dubai. Due to suspicions about his wife, their marriage had been fraught with tension. Yesterday afternoon, following an argument, Karim attacked his wife and daughter and stabbed them severely.

"When neighbors intervened to stop the violence, Karim also attacked them, injuring at least six people," said the chairman. The injured were later taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Karim's daughter, Nafiza Nasrin, said, "When the locals tried to save us, my father and uncles attacked them. The enraged crowd then retaliated, leading to the death of my two uncles."

Inspector Abu Zafar said that the bodies have been sent to the morgue for autopsy, and the police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the killings.

"Further details will be revealed after the investigation," he said.
