The postponed elections in 19 Cyclone Remal-hit upazilas will be held tomorrow (9 June), concluding the sixth Upazila Parishad elections.

Earlier, on April 18, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the third phase of polling in 112 upazilas. However, voting in 20 upazilas of Khulna and Barisal divisions was postponed due to the cyclone.

Again, the EC suspended voting in Rangamati's Baghaichhari upazila, citing a deteriorating law and order situation there and inclement weather.

On Saturday, Mohammad Monir Hossain, senior election officer of Rangamati, said voting materials could not be sent to the centers due to adverse weather conditions.

Besides, considering the overall law and order situation, the election in Baghaichari has been postponed, he added.

There have been reports of threatening the agents chairman and female vice-chairman candidates in the upazila.

Voting will continue in the remaining upazilas from 8am to 4pm, with only one upazila using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

The upazilas are Khaliajuri, Sharankhola, Morelganj, Mongla, Koira, Paikgachha, Dumuria, Gouranadi, Agailjhara, Patuakhali Sadar, Mirzaganj, Dumki, Mathbaria, Tajumuddin, Lalmohan, Rajapur, Kathalia, Bamana and Patharghata.

A total of 330 candidates are contesting in these polls, including 119 people for the post of chairman, 132 for the post of vice-chairman and 79 people for the position of female vice-chairman.

There are 3,46,088 voters in the 1,181 centre of these 19 upazilas.
