The Election Commission (EC) has cancelled the candidature of an independent candidate for the Lakshmipur-1 constituency Mohammad Habibur Rahman Paban, also a presidium member of Jubo League, for violating the electoral code of conduct.

The commission issued a letter, signed by Deputy Secretary of the EC's legal section Abdus Salam, in this regard on Tuesday.

According to the letter, the candidate Habibur Rahman Paban made a phone call to the deputy commissioner of Lakshimpur through WhatsApp at 7:30pm on 30 December and made objectionable and indecent statements.

The deputy commissioner then sent a letter to the Election Commission Secretariat on the same day, requesting it to take legal action against the candidate.

The deputy commissioner in his letter alleged that candidate Paban had threatened to transfer the returning officer and superintendent of police within three days.

In response, the election enquiry committee sent a report to the Election Commission on 31 December 2023 recommending legal action against the candidate.
