Solitary Barguna-1 victory opens parliament’s doors to Islami Andolan
Although limited to a single victory, Islami Andolan finished 2nd in several constituencies
Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) secured a solitary victory in the 13th parliamentary election held yesterday (12 February), despite fielding candidates in all 300 constituencies.
The party's breakthrough came in Barguna-1, where Md Oli Ullah, contesting with the "Haat Pakha" symbol, defeated Md Nazrul Islam Molla of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
According to the official results, Oli Ullah polled 140,291 votes to win the seat, while his nearest rival secured 136,145 votes.
In the same constituency, Md Jahangir Hossain of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis received 6,232 votes.
Although limited to a single victory, Islami Andolan finished second in several constituencies.
In Patuakhali-1, BNP candidate Altaf Hossain Chowdhury won the seat with 152,087 votes, while the Islami Andolan nominee secured 58,161 votes.
In Patuakhali-3, Islami Andolan candidate Md Abu Bakkar Siddiqi came second with 38,188 votes. The seat was won by Nurul Haque Nur of Gono Odhikar Parishad, contesting with the "Truck" symbol.
In Patuakhali-4, the party's Mostafizur Rahman finished second with 70,127 votes. BNP candidate ABM Mosharraf Hossain was elected with 124,013 votes.
In Bhola-1, Islami Andolan candidate Obaidur Rahman placed third with 25,345 votes. The constituency was won by Andaleeve Rahman of the Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), who secured 105,543 votes.
In Barishal-5, Islami Andolan's Mufti Syed Md Faizul Karim finished second with 95,044 votes, while BNP candidate Mujibur Rahman Sarwar won the seat with 135,146 votes.
Meanwhile, in Mymensingh-2, Muhammad Ullah of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis was elected with 146,202 votes on the "Rickshaw" symbol. His nearest rival, Motahar Hossain Talukder of the BNP, received 118,438 votes on the "Dhaner Sheesh" symbol.
