Heavy rain causes severe waterlogging in Dhaka

Due to incessant rainfall all day on Thursday, there arose severe waterlogging in several parts of the capital.

Meanwhile, the accumulated rainwater in some areas of the capital has reached the danger mark.

Masum, operator of a water pump in Kalyanpur, told The Business Standard water level at the pump area has risen to 5 metres, surpassing the danger level.

Mentioning that currently five pumps are operational in Kalyanpur to alleviate water accumulation in Dhaka North areas, pump operator Masum said, "If the heavy rainfall continues, the task of pumping and draining the water will be challenging."
He said if the rainfall ceases at this point, a substantial portion of the water can be removed within an hour. "But if the rain persists, it may exceed the danger level."

Previously, during cyclone Sitrang last year, the water level reached a peak of 5.7 metres in Dhaka.
Due to the heavy rainfall since Thursday evening, several areas of the capital, including Mirpur 10, Mirpur 11, Shyamoli, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Purana Paltan, Gulistan, Old Dhaka, Bangshal Road, Bijoy Sarani, Eskaton, Farmgate and Tejgaon have reportedly been submerged.
