HC questions RU vice chancellor’s legality of holding office

The High Court on Monday issued a ruling asking the authorities concerned to explain under what authority Prof M Abdus Subhan is holding the office of vice chancellor of Rajshahi University.

The court asked the vice chancellor and others concerned to respond to the ruling within next four weeks.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir issued the rule after the primary hearing of the writ filed by a former student of the university.

Salman Firoz Faisal filed the petition challenging the legality of Rajshahi University vice chancellor Abdus Subhan of holding office as he has been appointed without formation of a panel nominated for selecting the Vice Chancellor.

Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali appeared for the writ petition while Deputy Attorney General Kazi Mainul Hassan moved for the state.

Abdus Subhan was reappointed as the vice chancellor of the university for four years on May 7 in 2017.

On May 15 this year, a Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Mujahidul Islam has served a legal notice seeking removal of Subhan from the post of vice chancellor.

The writ petition was filed later as no respond was made after the notice was served.

The notice states that on June 21 same year, M Abdus Subhan joined Applied Physics and Electronic Engineering Department in the university as a professor, leading a vacancy in the Vice Chancellor post.

To fill the vacant post, he appointed science faculty dean Dr Akhter Faruque as acting vice chancellor for one day without taking any consent from the President, chancellor of the university.

The appointment of acting vice chancellor bypassing the President is violation of the 1973 University Ordinance.
