'They did not let me take my mother to the hospital'

Around 10.30am Wednesday, Kamruzzaman was taking his ailing mother to Mirpur Heart Foundation in the capital from their residence in Siddhirganj of Narayanganj.
His mother, who has acute chest and back pain, has been advised by local doctors to see a cardiologist in Dhaka for better treatment.
The CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying the duo was stopped by transport workers at Chashara as they enforced nationwide strike demanding an amendment to the Road Transport Act 2018.

"They did not let our vehicle move ahead," he said over the phone.
The man then pleaded to the protesters to let him pass initially, he said, adding, later the roads were cleared for him after he showed them his mother's prescriptions and medical reports to prove that she needed immediate medical attention.
Then after a while, they reached Signboard point, roads were blocked from all sides there. He told this correspondent that the workers barred them again at that point.
Once again Kamruzzaman pulled out all the documents and frantically held them in front of the agitators begging them to let their vehicle pass.
But all efforts went in vain. The protestors did not clear the roads after his repeated requests, and they were forced to go back home, he added.
Bangladesh Truck-covered Van Owners and Workers Oikya Parishad have begun to observe strike across the country from this morning to press home their 9-point demand including an amendment to the Road Transport Act 2018. Transport workers have also been staging protest since Sunday with the demand.
