Indefinite transport strike in Khulna, Barishal divisions from 2 Dec
They seek a stop to unauthorised BRTC operations, removal of BRTC counters, and limits on three-wheelers
Transport owners have declared an indefinite strike in the Khulna and Barishal divisions starting 2 December to press home their three-point demand including an immediate halt to unauthorised BRTC operations.
Leaders of ten inter-district bus, minibus, coach, and microbus owners' associations from seven districts made the announcement today (16 November) at a press conference at the Bagerhat Press Club.
The association leaders also formed a human chain on Shaheed Minar Road today to press home their demands.
Their demands include stopping unauthorised BRTC vehicles, removing BRTC counters, and restricting three-wheelers to side roads, with long-distance transport operating only from district terminals.
Md Anwarul Islam, president of the Rupsha–Bagerhat Transport Owners' Association, said the strike follows the authorities' rejection of their three-point demand.
"Ten transport owners' associations from seven districts have called an indefinite strike on 18 routes," he said.
He alleged that owners and workers in the southern region have long suffered discrimination and financial losses due to unregulated BRTC and leased vehicles, while illegal three-wheelers—including easy bikes and Mahindras—operate freely and recklessly.
Leaders present at the briefing included Sardar Liaquat Ali, Md Shahidul Islam, Shahjahan Mina, Ziauddin Ziam, Abul Kalam Azad, Abdullah Al Noman, Matiur Rahman, Sardar Jasim, and representatives from neighbouring districts.
