4 Hefazat ‘men’ arrested over Hathazari clashes

Police on Thursday arrested four people, including a local Hefazat-e-Islam leader, in a case filed in connection with clashes between law enforcers and madrassa students at Hathazari in Chattogram.

"Police have arrested four people in connection with the attack on Hathazari Police Station," said Chattogram District Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Afzarul Haque Tutul.

One of the arrestees has been identified as Maulana Kamrul Uddin, he added.

However, Noman Faizi, Hefazat's publicity secretary, told The Business Standard, "The arrestees are supporters of Hefazat. None of our leaders and activists has been arrested yet."

On 26 March, four people, including three madrassa students, were killed in clashes between police and Hefazat activists in protest of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh. Later, madrasa students attacked Hathazari Police Station, set fire to the Sadar land office and the dak bungalow.

On 31 March, five days after the incident, Ekramul Haque Sikder, an official at the Upazila Assistant Commissioner's (Land) Office, and Akhter Kamal Chowdhury, assistant land officer at the Sadar Union Land Office, filed two separate cases.

The police have also filed four separate cases over the attack on Hathazari Police Station, obstructing police from carrying out duties, beating policemen, and setting a fire.

Around 2,500 unidentified persons have been accused in the six cases.
