The High Court has rejected the exoneration plea of former deputy inspector general (prisons) Partha Gopal Banik in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim rejected the petition on Monday.

On Sunday, Partha Gopal's lawyer Golam Rabbani filed the petition with the HC.

The lawyer told the media that his client could still file another petition with another HC bench.

On July 28, 2019, Partha Gopal, the then DIG (prisons) of Sylhet division, was interrogated at the ACC headquarters. The same afternoon, the ACC confiscated Tk80 lakh cash in a raid on his Dhaka residence, and arrested him.

Subsequently, ACC Director Mohammad Salahuddin filed a case against Partha with Kalabagan Police Station bringing charges of irregularities and corruption. In August 2020, the anti-graft watchdog submitted a chargesheet in the case.

More than two months later, the former DIG (prisons) appealed to a lower court of Dhaka for exoneration in the case. The court framed charges against him, rejecting the plea.

Then the former prison official moved to the HC and filed a review petition.

In the meantime, the home ministry suspended the DIG (prisons). The suspension order was made effective from the day of his arrest.
