The United States' national debt hit $40.05 trillion on 19 August, more than doubling from $19.95 trillion in January 2017 and reaching 123% of GDP, or nearly $117,000 per person. It took 200 years for US debt to reach its first $1 trillion; today, the country borrows roughly that amount every five months, with interest costs exceeding national defence spending.
