Actor Zaher Alvi denied bail, sent to jail over allegations of abetting wife's suicide
According to the case statement, Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf around her neck at her residence in Mirpur DOHS on 28 February.
A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, and ordered that he be placed in jail in connection with a case filed over allegations of abetment to the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order today (18 June) after the accused surrendered before the court through his legal counsel and sought bail, confirmed Public Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid.
According to the bail petition, it is claimed that the accused had no involvement in the incident.
It was argued that, due to the couple's love marriage, the complainant had filed the case out of personal resentment, with the intention of harassing the accused.
The petition further claimed that the FIR contains no specific allegations against him. It also claimed that the incident occurred and the case was filed when the accused was in Nepal.
The petition also argued that the accused is seriously ill and suffers from a severe respiratory condition. Given his current medical condition, it would be inappropriate to keep him confined in an enclosed environment or in custody, as doing so could pose a significant risk to his health, including the possibility of respiratory failure leading to death.
Lawyers representing the complainant opposed the plea. After hearing submissions from both sides, the court ruled against the bail application.
According to the case statement, Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf around her neck at her residence in Mirpur DOHS on 28 February. Family members rescued her and took her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Later that night, Ikra's father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case alleging that his daughter had been driven to take her own life due to prolonged family disputes and various forms of abuse.
Zaher Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and have a son together.
In the same case, Alvi's mother, Nasrin Sultana Shyuli, surrendered before the court on 4 June and was subsequently granted bail.
