A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan in connection with a case filed at Pallabi Police Station over allegations of abetment to the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahjahan Kabir Alvir passed the order today (6 July) following a hearing, confirmed State Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid, adding that the defence, represented by Lawyer Sheikh Robayet Islam, sought bail for the actor.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the bail plea.
Earlier, on 18 June, following Alvi's surrender before the court, his initial bail application was rejected and he was remanded in custody.
On 21 June, investigators applied for a 10-day police remand. On 24 June, the court granted a two-day remand instead. After the remand ended on 30 June, Alvi was sent back to jail.
According to the case statement, Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf around her neck at her residence in Mirpur DOHS on 28 February. Family members rescued her and took her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Later that night, Ikra's father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case alleging that his daughter had been driven to take her own life due to prolonged family disputes and various forms of abuse.
Zaher Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and have a son together.
In the same case, Alvi's mother, Nasrin Sultana Sheuli, surrendered before the court on 4 June and was subsequently granted bail.
