Court grants two-day remand for actor Zaher Alvi in suicide abetment case
According to the remand petition, Alvi allegedly posted insulting, provocative and mentally abusive remarks targeting his wife Ikra on Facebook.
Television actor Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, popularly known as Zaher Alvi, was placed on a two-day remand today (24 June) in a case filed over allegations of abetting his wife's suicide.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order after a hearing, confirmed Public Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid.
Earlier, on 21 June, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Md Abdul Malek sought a 10-day remand to question the accused. The court scheduled the hearing for today, requiring Alvi's presence.
According to the remand petition, Alvi allegedly posted insulting, provocative and mentally abusive remarks targeting his wife Ikra on Facebook.
The petition also alleged that, despite being married, he posted a photograph with another woman on 27 February, accompanied by provocative comments.
Investigators told the court that remand was necessary to uncover the facts of the case and arrest other absconding accused.
During the hearing, the defence lawyers requested the cancellation of the remand and applied for bail, while the prosecution opposed this request.
After considering both arguments, the court granted a two-day remand.
On 18 June, Alvi surrendered to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin, seeking bail through his legal representatives.
However, the court rejected his bail application and ordered his remand in custody.
According to the case statement, family members found Ikra hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf around her neck at her residence in Mirpur DOHS on 28 February.
She was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Later that night, Ikra's father Kabir Hayat Khan filed the case.
He alleged that prolonged family disputes and various forms of abuse had driven his daughter to take her life.
In the same case, Alvi's mother, Nasrin Sultana Sheuly, surrendered before the court and secured bail on 4 June.
Alvi and Ikra married in 2010 and have a son.
